CHENNAI: In an attempt to make the Russian language popular by taking it to Tier-2 cities, the Russian Centre of Science and Culture and the Indo-Russian Friendship Society are planning a number of activities. As a first step, the Federal Agency of CIS Affairs, Compatriots Abroad and International Humanitarian Cooperation, will together host a Russia-India Social Dialogue in Moscow on November 18 and 19. The Indo-Russian conference is expected to discuss ways to popularise the Russian language in India, strengthen economic and political cooperation, promote inter-university collaboration and art and cultural exchange, said P. Thangappan, secretary general of the Indo-Russian Chamber of Commerce. It also seeks to provide a new level of interaction between the people of the two countries. Nearly 60 delegates from India, including Russian language experts, professors from scientific institutions, members of Indo-Russian friendship societies, members from various non-governmental organisations, Indian alumni of Russian institutions, scientists, economists and representatives of corporate organisations, are scheduled to take part in the conference. The Russian Centre of Science and Culture in the city offers Russian classes. Twenty students are undergoing classes and it hopes to attract more students with a tailor-made syllabus.
