Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: A bust size bronze statue of Kulapati K.M.Munshi, founder of the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, was unveiled by M.N.Venkatachaliah, former Chief Justice of India, at the Bhavan’s premises here on Saturday on the occasion of its golden jubilee celebrations.

Describing Munshi as a multi-faceted personality, Mr.Venkatachaliah said he founded the Bhavan to safeguard, preserve and promote Indian culture, heritage, and traditions. His aim was to synthesize the diversities, contradictions and complexities of life in India. Disputing that Indian culture was anti-development, Mr. Venkatachaliah said it was due to lack of interaction between western science and Indian culture. He wanted the Bhavan to explore the potential power of synthesizing Indian culture with western system for development.

Unveiling the portrait of T.V.Viswanatha Aiyar, founder vice-president of the Chennai Kendra, former Attorney General of India K.Parasaran said legal profession was now at cross roads. He said integrity should be maintained not only by judges but also by the bar. Earlier merit, integrity and competence were the only consideration for appointment of judges. He said Viswanatha Aiyar was a man of rare integrity, who was an acknowledged leader of the legal profession.

T.S.Krishna Murthy, chairman of the Chennai Kendra, said Munshi was the distinguished architect of the country, who was instrumental in reconstructing Somanath temple and formation of the Bhavan. His constructive work for the country would remain for ever.

On the occasion a library with a reading room facility was declared open.
