HYDERABAD: A day after the deadline for filing nominations was over, the top leadership of the Praja Rajyam was busy clearing some more names and convincing rebel candidates to withdraw from the fray in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) polls. Party leaders indicated that they would confirm the names of contestants for at least half-a-dozen divisions including Bagh Lingampally and Kukatpally, apart from the original list of 50 contestants that were announced on Friday. The shroud of secrecy around the exercise continued to be firmly in place even on Saturday, as party seniors grappled with the exercise of identifying a few more candidates. Praja Rajyam president K. Chiranjeevi called a meeting of the party’s Political Affairs Committee to identify candidates who had filed nominations on Friday and give them the official nod. It is understood that while the party had declared only 50 names of contestants on Friday, more than one aspirant had filed nominations from all the 150 divisions. The party high command had a tough time convincing rebel candidates in 20 divisions to withdraw from the fray. Despite their names not being announced, they had all decided to campaign with photographs of Mr. Chiranjeevi, saying they had invested too much of their time, energy and money in preparations.
