SHOW OF SKILLS: Students displaying science models at the ‘Brain Quest – 2009’ in Udupi on Saturday.

Udupi: The two-day sixth annual Udupi District Science and Technology Fair/Competition titled “Brain Quest 2009”, organised by E-Skool, got off to a colourful start here on Saturday.

As many as 200 models related to science and engineering are on display at the venue. Some of the models introduced the schoolchildren to the exciting world of Animatronics (animation with electronics).

Around 40 models and experiments in the Physical Science and Life Science categories have been made by 325 students from 33 schools in Udupi district. They included those connected to agriculture, wind energy, drip irrigation, rainwater harvesting etc. Students explained about the models and answered questions posed by the visitors. Shivaprasad, a Class 10 student from Udupi Government Pre-University College, said the fair helped him learn more about technology.

His classmate Santesha said: “I am curious to know the concepts of science behind the equipment which we use daily”. A few students said the competition had helped them come up with innovative ideas and for a few others it provided a platform to fine-tune their skills of presentation. Taranath, a Class 10 student of Volakadu Government High School said: “It has prompted us to find new ways of developing a model. We can create better models next year. Besides, we go through books while preparing the models and that helps us in improving our knowledge.” Sukrith Prabhu, a class nine student of Little Rock Indian School, Brahmavar, said the exhibition provided him an opportunity to explain scientific aspects of his model to the people.

Students also took part in the problem-solving competition, which tested their analytical and other skills.

Director of E-Skool Poornima Kamath said the intention behind the fair was to arouse interest among students in learning science.
