Swedish PM lauds Sulabh’s efforts

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Lauding the role of voluntary organisation Sulabh International in providing hygienic and cheap toilet facilities to poor in India and other developing nations, visiting Prime Minister of Sweden Fredrik Reinfeldt has said the toilet technology developed by the NGO should be promoted globally, particularly in poor and developing nations.

Mr. Reinfeldt, who visited the Sulabh International headquarters here on Friday, said this cheap toilet technology was very helpful in dealing with global warming as it uses less water and its bye-products were also brought under various use like in producing bio-gas and organic fertilizer. It could be widely used to deal with civic problems in poor nations, he pointed out.

“Being in New Delhi, I could not resist the temptation of visiting the Sulabh campus and meet Dr. Bindeshwar Pathak (Sulabh’s founder) and see his work which is certainly very impressive,” Mr. Reinfeldt said. Significantly, the Swedish Water Academy recently awarded Dr. Pathak with the Stockholm Water Prize 2009 for his efforts in conserving environment.

Interestingly, Mr. Reinfeldt became the first head of a foreign government to visit the Sulabh campus. He not only met the erstwhile scavengers from Alwar who were recently honoured in the U.N. but also visited the toilet museum.
