Thirty rivulets, streams in spate

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: At least 30 rivulets and streams were in spate on Saturday in Nellore, Chittoor, Kadapa and Prakasam districts following heavy rain under the influence of a vigorous North-East monsoon.

Disaster Management Commissioner S. Balasubramanyam said the floods in all these rivulets and streams were, however, on a downward trend.

Chief Minister K. Rosaiah who was away in Delhi, reviewed the situation and instructed the Collectors of these districts to be on constant vigil and take necessary precautionary measures to prevent breaches to water sources and roads and avoid loss of life and property.

Breaches on highway

Mr. Balasubramanyam said the Vijayawada-Chennai highway developed breaches at Butchireddpalem and Sullurpet in Nellore district, but one of them was already plugged and traffic restored. A causeway got washed away in Jaladanki mandal in the same district as the area received heavy rainfall of 22 cm on Friday.

The Penna river rose slightly, especially below Somasila project in Nellore district. The storage in the reservoir of Somasila dam, as a result, went up to 58 tmcft against its full capacity of 74 tmcft.

The dam was getting an inflow of 6,000 cusecs whereas a small quantity out of this was being released to Kandaleru reservoir lying downstream.

Similarly, the storage in Kandaleru reached 26 tmcft (68 tmcft full capacity) as it was getting 1,600 cusecs of inflow. However, a quantity of over 2,000 cusecs was being released from here to serve various needs. The outflow to Chennai through Telugu Ganga canal was being continued.
