Floods: Rosaiah seeks Central funds for rehabilitation

NEW DELHI: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister K. Rosaiah has requested Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to provide assistance for long-term rehabilitation and reconstruction of damaged infrastructure, which were outside the purview of the Calamity Relief Fund and National Calamity Contingency Fund schemes, to the State government in view of recent heavy floods.

The Chief Minister, who was here on a maiden visit after taking over his new assignment, wanted Dr. Singh to declare Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhkapatnam and East Godavari districts as extremist affected and provide assistance to the State to augment infrastructure facilities.

He also wanted Polavaram and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Pranahita Chevella Sujala Sravanthi Projects to be included as national projects and release of Central Share for National Agricultural Insurance Scheme (NAIS) Claims for Kharif, 2008.

Meets Chidambaram

Mr. Rosaiah met Home Minister P. Chidambaram with similar demands. Besides, he requested for the Centre’s approval for AP government’s proposal to organise single local cadre in respect of newly created cadre of teachers in government, zilla parishad and mandal parishad schools under the Presidential Order 1975. He met Defence Minister A.K. Antony and sought strengthening of maritime and coastal security against threats from the sea in AP and taking over of Hindustan Shipyard Limited, Vizag, by the Defence Ministry. He discussed political situation with Law Minister and Congress general secretary in charge of Andhra Pradesh M. Veerappa Moily.

He also wanted Constitutional Amendment on sub-categorisation of SCs in the ensuing session of the Parliament.
