On the brink: Officials inspecting the Puraiyathan Vaical, where a breach was plugged after heavy rainfall in Tarangampadi on Saturday. NAGAPATTINAM: Nagapattinam district continued to receive heavy rain on Saturday, offering no respite for the public or the farming community here. The district administration has taken up precautionary measures following the continuous rain in the district. Sand bagsThe Public Works Department has stocked 2.33 lakh sand bags and over 1,700 Casuarina wood logs. Thirty nine Cyclone Protection Camps have been set up. About 1,623 metric tones of rice have been stocked at 270 anganvadis in low-lying areas. The Revenue Department, Public Works Department and Agriculture Department have geared up to meet any potential emergency situation arising due to the relentless rain. InspectionMeanwhile, A. Annadurai, District Revenue Officer, inspected flood water drainage channels at Thalachangadu, Melayur, Kadayanai and Ponayathanvaikal. On Saturday, Mayiladuthurai reported heavy rain through the day. Nagapattinam witnessed heavy but intermittent rainfall throughout the day. The chief amount of rainfall recorded in the district over the 24-hour period ending 8.30 a.m. on Saturday were as follows (in mm): Tharangambadi 40.3, Mayiladuthurai 41, Thalainayar 64.6, Thiruthirapoondi 75, Sirkazhi 95.4, Nagapattinam 42.2, Vedaranyam 41, Kollidam 94, Manalmedu 39. The district recorded an average rainfall of 59.17 mm.
