PERAMBALUR: The State government has recently issued guidelines for taking up a few works from the unutilised panchayat funds, District Collector M. Vijyakumar said. Addressing village panchayat presidents at a meeting held here on Saturday, the Collector said that the State government had taken the decision in the wake of funds being available with a large number of village panchayats across the State. He said that the panchayat presidents could take up three works namely provision of additional street lights, compound wall for school buildings and construction of new ‘anganwadi’ buildings. He appealed to the panchayat presidents to submit proposals for taking up any or all of these works depending upon the availability of surplus funds. Sanction would be accorded after obtaining prior permission from the government, he added. The Collector also said that a little over 37,000 youths had participated in the rural sports festival organised as part of Anna birth centenary celebrations in the district. He advised the panchayat presidents to encourage the sports talents among rural youth by making similar elaborate arrangements for the ‘Pongal’ festival scheduled to be held in a couple of months. Pointing out that he had been receiving a large number of petitions demanding old age pension, the Collector said that a special camp would be held in parts of the district for ascertaining the eligibility of the petitioners. Steps would be taken for immediate sanctioning of assistance to all the eligible aged persons, he said. The Project Officer, District Rural Development Agency, S. Amalraj, the Personal Assistant to the Collector, Tamizharasi, the Assistant Director of Panchayats, Muthusamy, were present.
