PATIENT HEARING: Rural Industries and Animal Husbandry Minister Pongalur N. Palanisay (second right) and District Collector P. Palanisamy on Wednesday promised the Sri Lankan Tamil refugees in the four camps in Coimbatore district that steps would be taken to provide them with all the required basic amenities very soon. Earlier, the Minister accompanied by Collector P. Umanath, inspected the camps at Kottur near Pollachi, Aliyar, Pooluvapatti, near Coimbatore, and Vedar Colony near Mettupalayam and interacted with them to ascertain their grievances. At Kottur, the refugees sought ten street lights, power connection to 130 houses, public convenience, power connection to the school building besides community certificates and PDS outlet in their locality. They also sought early disbursement of bed sheets which used to be given to them every two years and wheat for the diabetic patients. For the married children, they sought allotment of separate houses. Addressing the refugees, Mr. Palanisamy said that there are 115 such camps in Tamil Nadu. In Kottur, there are 212 families and 815 persons, in Aliyar 253 families and 838 persons; Vedar Colony has 245 families and 874 persons; while Pooluvapatti there are 248 families and 998 persons. In all the four camps here, there are 968 families and 3,525 persons. The objective of the visit is to know the problems faced by the refugees and prepare a report and send it to the Government through the Collector before November 10. Valparai MLA, Kovai Thangam and a number of others visited the camps.
