MYSORE: Sujatha Ramadorai, National Knowledge Commission (NKC) member and professor at Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai, on Saturday urged budding researchers to equip themselves with the knowledge of English, stating that it was the language of research.

Speaking after receiving the C.V. Raman Mahila Vijnana Puraskara at the second National Women’s Science Congress at AIISH here, she said talents should be exploited without creating a linguistic divide. The exciting technologies available to hone skills in English should be made use as it was time to think locally and act globally. Like regional languages, English was also important as it happened to be the language of research. Prof. Ramadorai said the Department of Science and Technology, CSIR and the DBT were coming up with various projects to bring women to the forefront of academia. It was time for women to be part of the rapid expansion of laboratories and universities in the country and overcome the shortage of teachers, she said.

Prof. Ramadorai, who teaches at the School of Maths in TIFR, said National Knowledge Network (NKN) was being developed to link institutions across the country using optic fibre cables. The capability of optic fibre cables laid across the country had not been fully utilised, and therefore, networking would be done using unused space in the cables to address the needs of mass education.
