“Achuthanandan got his facts totally wrong on dam”

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Saturday said that his Kerala counterpart V.S. Achuthanandan was totally wrong when he stated that the Tamil Nadu government had agreed to the construction of a new alternative dam across the Mullaperiyar, at the talks with the Centre in 1979.

In a statement here, Mr. Karunanidhi said that if Tamil Nadu had done so, there would have been no necessity for it to have continuously taken steps to strengthen the dam and there would not have been a situation for the Centre to often conduct inspections.

On Mr. Achuthanandan’s reaction to his renewed plea for posting CISF personnel at the dam site as Kerala officials were causing hindrance to the functioning of Tamil Nadu officials, Mr. Karunanidhi said when such dams were being constructed, it would not be done in a manner that its stability would last only a century.

If the dam was properly maintained, it would be safe for several centuries.

That was why engineers had said that the dam would remain strong for several centuries.

Political mileage

The dam had been strengthened in such a manner to withstand tremors. Mr. Achuthanandan was unnecessarily trying to create panic and, thereby, trying to draw political mileage out of it, Mr. Karunanidhi said.
