Indira Ramamurthi dead

CHENNAI: Renowned obstetrician and gynaecologist Indira Ramamurthi died here on Saturday. She was 89.

She had been ill for a couple of days and died in her sleep early in the morning, friends of the family said.

Dr. Indira Ramamurthi was the wife of pioneering neurosurgeon B. Ramamurthi, who was widely acknowledged as the ‘Father of Neurosurgery’ in India. Her parents were the renowned Ayurvedic doctor A. Lakshmipathy and Rukmani Lakshmipathy, who served as Health Minister of Tamil Nadu.

Dr. Indira was a Fellow of Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and member, Federation of Obstetric and Gynaecological Societies of India, Madras. She served as honorary professor of obstetrics and gynaecology at the Government Maternity Hospital and Madras Medical College. She was also the chief of the department of obstetrics and gynaecology.

She is survived by her two sons, R. Vijayaraghavan, a journalist, and Ravi Ramamurthi, neurosurgeon.
