Hartal observed in Ochiyam panchayat

Police deployed in strength in sensitive areas

CPI(M) worker’s house attacked

Kozhikode: Tension prevailed in Onchiyam and adjoining areas in the district following the reported attack on Revolutionary Marxist Party (RMP) leader Puthiyadathu Jayarajan at Kannukkara on Friday.

The Revolutionary Marxist Party, a splinter group of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M), observed a dawn-to-dusk hartal at Onchiyam grama panchayat on Saturday.

Shops and commercial establishments remained closed and vehicles kept off the roads. There was heavy police deployment. Assistant Superintendent of Police (Vadakara) Debeshkumar Behera visited the area.

Isolated incidents of violence were reported on Friday night as a sequel to the attack on Jayarajan. A column installed in memory of CPI(M) local leader P.P. Gopalan in front of Onchiyam school was damaged. CPI(M) worker Ashokan’s house came under attack early on Saturday, the police said. RMP workers took out a march in various parts of Vadakara. Tension prevailed at Orkatteri, Eramala, Kunnummal, Onchiyam and Vellikulangara.

Jayarajan, an employee of the Onchiyam Service Cooperative Bank was reportedly attacked by a group which arrived in a jeep at Kannukkara at 1.30 p.m. Jayarajan suffered serious injures on the head, neck, hands and legs. His palm was almost severed.

Miscreants also attacked RMP worker Erayithazhakuni Prasanth. He sustained minor injuries. The Chombala police registered a case.

Onchiyam had been the epicentre of CPI(M) dissidence in the State and had witnessed clashes between CPI(M) and the rebels.

The swelling in ranks of the RMP led by former CPI(M) leaders T.P. Chandrashekaran and N. Venu had reportedly rattled the district leadership of the CPI(M).
