‘Rectify issues in e-filing of monthly returns’

Staff Reporter

SALEM: Traders and members of Salem City Chamber of Commerce urged the State Government to rectify the issues in the e-filing of monthly returns.

Participating at a workshop on Value Added Tax system organised by the chamber here on Friday, the traders pointed out that they were particularly facing difficulties in areas such as input tax credit while filing the monthly returns.

They said that the commercial tax officials were refusing to accept the filing of monthly returns if they find a few details missing in the documents.

This resulted in delay and the traders were penalised for delayed submission.

The government should instruct the Commercial Taxes Department to accept the filing of monthly returns even if a few details were missing. These details could be collected from the traders after accepting the monthly returns.

The members urged the government to refund the amount due for the traders under the old TNGST system.

Joint Commissioner (Enforcement) A. Rajaraman, who took part in the workshop, said that a number of measures were being initiated to sort out the issues in VAT.

The Salem Region had over 80,000 registered traders. But the tax collected in the region remained low when compared to other regions in the State.

Stern action would be initiated against those who were found evading tax.

Joint Commissioner Vayana Perumal said that the government was taking steps to simplify the procedures for filing tax returns.
