Tirunelveli
self-reliant: Chairman of Tamil Nadu Energy Development Agency R. Christudoss Gandhi addressing a meeting organised with representatives of various colleges in Tirunelveli on Saturday. TIRUNELVELI: Chairman of Tamil Nadu Energy Development Agency (TEDA) R. Christudoss Gandhi had extensive deliberations with the representatives of various colleges here on Saturday to persuade them to establish biogas units and harvest renewable energy sources. Addressing a meeting, Mr. Christudoss Gandhi said that the bio waste being generated in the hostels of 400-odd engineering colleges across the State were either being disposed through the underground drainage system or in the septic tanks, which could be used for generating biogas for meeting the electricity requirements of hostels as well as colleges. While the installation of solar water heaters or solar steam cookers would cost the college administrations between Rs.20 lak and Rs.1 crore, they could get back more than their investment. Speaking to reporters after the meeting, he said that the Madurai Medical College would soon have a biogas unit in the hostel to meet a part of its energy needs. Tamil Nadu, which was producing 40 per cent of the total wind energy in the country, was working on increasing the height of windmill towers from the existing 70 metres or 100 metres to ascertain whether it would result in generation of more power. Collector M. Jayaraman and Deputy General Manager (Wind and Solar Energy), Duke Christopher Daniel were present.
