All-party panel inspects KC Canal barrage

Damage assessment: The all-party panel inspecting the KC Canal barrage at Sunkesula village on Saturday.

KURNOOL: The all-party panel which inspected the KC Canal barrage at Sunkesula on Saturday urged the government to immediately complete the repairs to the structure keeping in view the urgency of water for Kurnool city.

The panel comprised CPI (M) district secretary T. Shadrak, TDP district convener Somisetty Venkateswarlu, CPI leader Jagannatham, Seshaphani (Mana Party) and Karunakar (BSP).

Mr. Shadrak underscored the need for restoring the barrage to its original position at the earliest to ensure supply of water to crops as well as Kurnool city. Also, the panel wanted the government to take up rehabilitation of the residents of Sunkesula and Rajoli in a comprehensive way since the breaches wipe off the two villages. The resident told the visiting leaders that at least four cents land and 1.5 lakh was required to build a reasonable house. The offer of Rs. 68,450 for the house was inadequate, they said.

The leaders said the government should strengthen the barrage keeping in view the extensive damage to the structure. The nine-inch flood wall failed to withstand the flood.

Meanwhile, the all-party leaders visited the CWC gauge station at Bavapuram and examined the damage. They expressed displeasure over failure to restore the damaged structures and equipment.

The leaders visited Nidjur and Sunkesula villages and interacted with the flood victims.
