‘Stop damage to environment’

Meet: Deputy Commissioner of Dharwad Darpan Jain inaugurating the State-level seminar on ‘Environment and Development’ in Hubli on Saturday.

Hubli: Deputy Commissioner of Dharwad Darpan Jain has said that concerted efforts have to be made to stop indiscriminate exploitation of natural resources and the subsequent damage to the ecological system.

Mr. Jain was speaking after inaugurating the two-day State-level seminar on “Environment and Development” organised jointly by Eco Watch and BVB College of Engineering and Technology here on Saturday.

Mr. Jain said that the seminar should contemplate on the reasons behind natural calamity such as the recent floods in north Karnataka. He said the floods had left a trail of destruction and it was necessary to think of solutions to check recurrence of such calamities in future.

According to Mr. Jain fuel was used more than necessary. He argued that there was a need to chalk out a plan for development of agriculture and make it profitable. Besides, it was necessary to ensure that the farmers earned good revenue from agricultural activities they engage in the season concerned.

Chairman of Eco Watch Suresh Heblikar said that building airports and multi-storeyed buildings was being seen as development. He stressed on the need to check such development.

Former Director of ISEC, Bangalore Gopal K. Kadekodi spoke on the objectives of the seminar.

Geeta Bali, Vice-Chancellor of Karnataka State Women’s University, Raghavendra Auradkar, Police Commissioner of Hubli-Dharwad also spoke on the occasion.
