Shop-keepers told to conduct transactions in Kannada Farmers made aware of the importance of valid receipts BIDAR: Members of the Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) has organised a week-long market awareness campaign in rural areas of the district to stress the importance of selling their produce at the APMC yard. The campaign, which started on November 2, will be on till Monday. Addressing presspersons here on Saturday, district APMC president Vijaykumar Anande said that the campaign had been taken up at the directions of the Agricultural Marketing Board, Bangalore, in order to draw farmers to the APMC yard. Mr. Anande said that usually middlemen purchased produce at low prices from farmers in rural areas and later sold it at a higher price in cities. Thus, a farmer was denied reasonable prices for his produce. The campaign aimed to make farmers aware of the importance of valid receipts for all business transactions. Chits of white paper were not valid, he said. The awareness campaign would also encourage the use of Kannada to conduct business. Shop-keepers conducting business in Hindi and Marathi had been issued notices to use Kannada instead, Mr. Anande said. Weighing machinesHe said that steps would be initiated to install electronic weighing machines in the yard. Shop-keepers had been served notice to install electronic weighing machines in their shops, he said. A meeting would be convened to discuss the installation of electronic weighing machines in the shops at APMC yard in Bidar, he added. Mr. Anande said that members of the Bidar APMC were using the public address system to inform farmers of the advantages of conducting business in the APMC yard. Handbills have been distributed in rural areas to educate farmers on importance of taking their produce to APMC yard, he said. Secretary R.M. Kumaraswamy was present.
