MGU girls triumph

KOCHI: Mahatma Gandhi University jolted Kannur, last year’s all-India winner, 3-2 on its way to the South-West Zone inter-university women’s volleyball title at North Maharashtra University, Jalgaon, on Saturday.

The Kottayam-based MGU topped the championship’s final phase, the four-team league, with an all-win record.

In other matches of the league, MGU defeated Chennai’s SRM University, the all-India championship’s bronze medallist last year, in straight sets and Anna University, also from Chennai, 3-1.

The results (league):

Mahatma Gandhi, Kottayam bt Kannur 25-14, 21-25, 25-23, 19-25, 15-10; MGU bt SRM, Chennai 25-23, 25-15, 25-14.
