India fifth; Russia is champion

GURGAON: India gathered 35 points to finish fifth in the World powerlifting championship, which concluded here on Saturday.

On the basis of its overall performance, Russia claimed the top honours with 72 points. The second and third places went to Ukraine (57) and Poland (49) respectively.

On the final day, Dean Bowring pipped Oleg Gagin on the basis of better ‘Wilkis’ points and won the men’s +125 kg gold. Both were tied after lifting an identical 1,055 kg.

The results:

Men: 125 kg: 1. Igor Gagin (Rus) 1062.5 kg; 2. Viktor Testsov (Ukr) 1055 kg; 3. Greg Wagner (USA) 962.5 kg; 10. N.J. Jimson (Ind) 765 kg.

+125 kg: 1. Dean Bowring (Gbr) 1055 kg; 2. Oleg Gagin (Rus) 1055 kg; 3. Milan Spingl (Cze) 1042.5 kg.
