Firm decision sought: Activists of the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike and those engaged in sand mining form a human chain at Gandhi Circle in Davangere on Saturday. DAVANGERE: People involved in sand mining in Davangere district and activists of the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (Praveen Shetty faction) on Saturday took out a procession here demanding that the district administration fix a definite royalty payable for sand mining and sand transportation. Later, the agitators formed a human chain at Gandhi Circle for sometime and submitted a memorandum to Deputy Commissioner K. Amaranarayana in this regard. They said that in the absence of a definite royalty for sand mining in the district, the authorities concerned had been collecting huge sums as fines. The agitators said that an amount of Rs. 25 per truck/per tractor of sand had been fixed as royalty in Haveri, Dharwad and Hospet, and wanted the district administration to fix royalty on a par with this. They also sought an end to the harassment of those involved in the business. The protesters said this dharna was only the beginning of a major stir which would be planned, if the district administration failed to fix the royalty. Yellappa, district president of the vedike, and many people from Harihar and surrounding places where the Tungabhadra flows, participated in the agitation.
