Thanks to polls, power cuts lifted

Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: The staggered load reliefs being implemented in the city have been lifted with effect from Wednesday, presumably with an eye on the forthcoming GHMC elections. The relief from power cuts has been abrupt and inexplicable, sources from CPDCL say, adding that there has been no improvement in the condition of Srisailam power generation units, submergence of which necessitated the load reliefs about a month ago.

“There were instructions from the Chairman and Managing Director of APTransco towards staying the implementation of load reliefs. It was sudden and without any explanation. However, that the gas-based power plants have been instructed to operate at full capacity leaves a clue about the intentions behind the decision,” said an official from CPDCL.

Due to the submergence of the power plants at Srisailam, there had been a deficit of about 800 MW for the CPDCL. Apart from administering daily power cut for an hour in the core city as well as in adjoining urban localities, the authorities were also mulling over implementation of power holidays for industries in case of increased loads.

“The gap may be addressed through power imports and additional inputs from gas-based power plants. Another relief is the cold weather due to which demand has come down,” informs the official.

However, the Metro Zone officials informed that not much decline has been noticed in demand. Consumption hovered around 16.91 Million Units in the core city on Wednesday.

Power cuts to the rural domestic and agricultural consumers will, however, stay as before, officials informed.
