More CISF personnel to fortify NPA

SMART TURNOUT: Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram reviewing the passing out parade of the 61st batch of Indian Police Service probationers at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy in Hyderabad on Friday.

HYDERABAD: Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram on Friday said that it was proposed to increase the strength of Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel providing security to the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVP NPA) here so as to make the campus a secure place.

A research cell on the campus by releasing a corpus of Rs. 2.5 crore in 2010-11 and an annual grant of Rs. 20 lakh was also proposed. Another Rs. 30 crore would be released for construction of a senior police officers’ mess with 120 rooms, he told the passing out parade of the 61st batch of Indian Police Service (IPS) trainees of the SVP NPA. Mr. Chidambaram informed that the Central government took a number of steps to strengthen the security system on the principles of building capacity, competence and confidence of the police and the general public. As a result of the initiatives on a daily basis, the country was prepared to face any challenge to its sovereignty, integrity and security.

Yet, the country faced many more challenges as it was growing to become an economic power and also its population went up in large numbers. The security apparatus could never afford to sleep and had to be vigilant always.

National Police Academy Director Vijay Kumar said 99 trainees of the batch underwent 46 weeks of basic institutional training.

They included 23 women and eight officers of the Royal Bhutan Police Service.

The academy was in the process of setting up a special tactical wing at a cost of Rs. 8 crore to train officers in anti-terrorist tactics.

A national digital crime resource centre in association with NASSCOM was also on the anvil.

A mid-career training programme for IPS officers would be launched next year, Mr. Vijay Kumar added.

The Home Minister presented the Prime Minister’s baton and the Home Ministry’s revolver to parade commander Atul Kumar Thakur of Delhi, who was adjudged the best all-round trainee at the passing out parade.
