‘Congress trying to influence poll panel’

Staff Reporter

Thrissur: CPI(M) State Secretary Pinarayi Vijayan on Friday alleged that the Congress party has been trying to influence the Election Commission by misusing its power at the Centre. Addressing a district-level function, he said that former Chief Election Commissioner M.S. Gill had later became a Congress minister.

“The same was the case of Justice Ranganath Misra who inquired the 1984 Anti-Sikh riots, in which many Congress leaders were involved. He later became a Congress MP.”

He said that corporate giants were now controlling the media. “They set their agenda and then campaign for it through the media.”

‘Media manipulation’

He recalled the Western media propaganda justifying American attack on Iraq. Mainstream papers were blacking out important news to protect colonial interests, he alleged. The media manipulated the Nandigram incident and even the incidents of Maoist attacks.
