Assumption sitting pretty

KOCHI: Defending champion Assumption College (Changanassery) was sitting pretty after winning both its league matches in the Mahatma Gandhi University inter-collegiate women’s basketball championship at the St. Xavier’s College (Aluva) on Friday.

Anju Mohan was in fine form as Assumption defeated St. Peter’s (Kolencherry) 46-14 and Alphonsa (Pala) 63-41 in the league phase on Friday. The champion plays host St. Xavier’s in the championship’s last game on Saturday.

St. Xavier’s, last year’s runner-up, lost a close game against Alphonsa College at 70-78 which should further strengthen Assumption’s position at the top of the pack.

The results (league): Assumption 46 (Anju Mohan 16) bt St. Peter’s (Kolencherry) 14; Alphonsa (Pala) 78 (Sonumol Soman 22) bt St Xavier’s (Aluva) 70 (M.D. Lisha 16); St. Xavier’s 65 (Jinna 21) bt St. Peter’s 15; Assumption 63 (Anju Mohan 18) bt Alphonsa 41 (Sonumol Soman 11). — Principal Correspondent
