Rift over federation’s affiliation to AITUC

KOCHI: The MACTA Federation has split, as several members have decided to oppose the organisation’s affiliation with the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC).

The rift came to the fore owing to differences of opinion between Vinayan, chairman of the federation, and several other elected representatives of unions . The federation has 19 affiliated unions of various technicians in Malayalam film industry.

M. Mohan, veteran director, who attended the meeting of the rebel faction here on Friday, said that the decision to stay away from the federation was taken on the inference that the parent organisations in the film industry that included the Indian Film Employees Confederation (IFEC) and Film Employees Federation of South India (FEFSI) would not recognise the federation’s affiliation with the AITUC. He said that technicians would not get work in the industry, if they did not enjoy the support of these organisations.

Mr. Mohan said the future course of action would be taken based on the recommendations given by IFEC representatives. He said that no decision was taken on floating a new organisation at the meeting. Reacting to the developments, Mr. Vinayan alleged that only a few technicians had decided to leave the federation. He accused the Film Employees Federation of Kerala of orchestrating a split in the organisation. The federation will remain affiliated to the AITUC despite the reported split, he added.
