News Analysis
* * It’s Justice Markandey Katju, and not Justice Markandeya Katju as mentioned in “Enforcing the rule strictly” (Editorial, November 6, 2009). * * The last paragraph of a report “Judge withdraws from Reliance case” (November 5, 2009, page 1) said that Justice Markandey Katju, heading a Bench with Justice A.K. Ganguly, also recused himself in another case filed in 2003 between Reliance Industries Ltd. and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd. on the ground that his wife held shares of RIL Industries. A reader wanted to know how Justices A.K. Ganguly and Markandey Katju could have headed the bench pertaining to the cases in 2003, especially when they became Supreme Court judges on December 19, 2008 and April 10, 2006. The Legal Correspondent clarifies that it normally takes five to six years for a matter to reach final hearing. This is how a case filed in 2003 was listed for final hearing before this Bench. * * The fifth paragraph of a report “Wrangling ends, Congress-NCP to stake claim today” (November 6, 2009) was “Mr. Patel said all NCP leaders, including Deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal, were likely to take the oath on Saturday.” It should have been “all NCP ministers”. * * Mr. Gurunath Kulkarni is the NCP State unit general secretary, and not the NCP general secretary as mentioned in a report “Congress-NCP government soon, says Ashok Chavan” (November 1, 2009, page 1). * * A sentence in a cricket report “Pandey slams century; Dravid misses out” (“Sport”, November 4, 2009) was “Ironic as it may appear, the Nainital-born Pandey enthralled the crowd of his native state by launching a relentless attack on the home bowlers.” The reference was to the Nainital-born Manish Pandey (Karnataka) launching an attack on the home bowlers (Uttar Pradesh). The sentence should have read as “Ironic as it may appear, the Nainital-born Pandey enthralled the Meerut crowd ….” (The report was on the match between Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh on the opening day of the Ranji Trophy Elite league match at Meerut.)
