This Day That Age
(From an Editorial) Speaking at a Press Conference at Delhi, Mr. Nehru has stated that the Army has not only taken over the duty of defending all our frontiers with China but also the task of building all essential roads and communications. He has pointed out that it is for the Press to see that public confidence in the Government’s determination to hold our lawful borders is maintained. It should be pointed out, however, that the press depends for its information upon the Government and that the recent developments in those regions have been sufficiently serious to rouse misgivings on the state of our border defences. We have apparently lost a slice of Northern Ladakh and there has been some penetration of our outposts in the north-east Himalayan region. A party of frontier police has been overwhelmed and worsted by the Chinese, and they have not implemented their promise to return the captured personnel. Obviously, this is a setback for the policy of friendship with China which had allowed many border areas to be loosely patrolled and guarded.
