Useful: Transport Minister K.N. Nehru, distributing a colour television set to a beneficiary in Tiruchi. TIRUCHI: A new seven-span bridge across Kudamurutti river on the Vayalur road near here will soon be built at a cost of Rs.2.75 crore, said Transport Minister K. N. Nehru here recently. Distributing free television sets to 2,002 beneficiaries and free LPG gas stoves with gas connection to 784 beneficiaries of 45th and 47th wards respectively in the Tiruchi Municipal Corporation area, the Minister said that the bridge would come up under the flood prevention project currently under execution. Flood prevention measures were being taken up in the low-lying areas of the Tiruchi Corporation and pointed out that the Kudamurutti river would also be widened and strengthened. He said that the Government had sent a proposal to Jawaharlal National Urban Renewal Mission seeking Rs.3,500 crore assistance for providing various infrastructure facilities in the Tiruchi Corporation limits. More than Rs.1,000 crore assistance was expected. The Minister said that drinking water extension works were being taken up at a cost of Rs.169 crore in Tiruchi Municipal Corporation area to ensure drinking water supply without shortage for the next 40 years and these works would be completed in six months. A huge overhead water tank with four lakh litre capacity was also being built at Karumandapam, he added. Mr. Nehru pointed out that the Government was implementing several welfare schemes including marriage grants, maternity relief assistance, monthly grant for widows, spinsters old age pension and so on. Collector T. Soundiah, who presided over the function, explained in detail the various welfare schemes including Kalaignar’s Health Insurance Scheme for Life saving Treatments being implemented for the benefit of poor and weaker sections of the society. Mayor S. Sujatha, MLA Anbil Periasamy, Deputy Mayor M. Anbazhagan, Corporation Commissioner T. T. Balsamy spoke.
