Nedumbassery: St. Mary’s Jacobite Syrian Church in Angamaly will soon be elevated to the status of ‘Sunoro Cathedral’ (a cathedral where a revered religious relic is kept), by the Patriarch of Antioch Ignatius Zakka I, announced Catholicos Thomas I here. Addressing presspersons, he said the official declaration in this regard would be made at a public function to be held on the church premises in connection with the famous ‘Annidha festival’ on November 15. The function would also be attended by various social and spiritual leaders. The church will become the first cathedral to be known as “Sunoro Cathedral” in the Jacobite Church, which for long has been preserving the “Sunoro”, a portion of the holy dress of St. Mary, the mother of Jesus. The church is believed to have been consecrated in the name of St. Mary in 409 A.D. and initially, it also served as the headquarters of the Jacobite Syrian Church. The representatives of the church had attended the famous Mulanthuruthy Synod which led to the formation of the Malankara Association. The church witnessed the assembly of several synods and played a key role in the renowned Koonan Kurisu oath programme. Metropolitans Abraham Mar Severios, Joseph Mar Gregorios, Elias Mar Athanasios and Mathews Mar Aprem; church vicar Fr. Ittoop Alukkal and chief spokesperson of the church, Fr. Varghese Kallappara, were also present during the occasion.
