Lopsided matches in MGU championship

ALUVA: A series of lopsided matches marked the knockout stage of the Mahatma Gandhi University inter-collegiate women’s basketball championship which began at the St. Xavier’s College here on Thursday.

After the knockout stage, defending champion Assumption (Changanassery), last year’s runner-up St. Xavier’s, Alphonsa (Pala) and St. Peter’s (Kolencherry) entered the league phase which will decide the winner.

Thiruvalla’s Mar Thoma College, which lost to St. Peter’s in the knockout round, was the only team from last year’s top four to miss the league stage this time. The league phase begins on Friday morning.

The results (knockout stage): Assumption bt College of Engineering (Thodupuzha) 38-12; St. Xavier’s bt Union Christian (Aluva) 37-11; Alphonsa bt St. Teresa’s (Ernakulam) 38-10; St. Peter’s bt Mar Thoma (Thiruvalla) 28-6.

Girideepam invitational tournament from today

The 19th Girideepam invitational inter-school basketball tournament begins at the Girideepam Bethany School here on Friday. Twelve teams each in the boys’ and girls’ sections will figure in the four-day event.

A mini basketball tournament, which will feature four teams, will also be held simultaneously.

Former Indian star Subash J. Shenoy will inaugurate the tournament.

The groupings: Boys: Pool A: Girideepam ‘A’ (Ktm), SC Seminary HSS (Tvl), Lajnathul Muhammadiya HSS (Alp). Pool B: Cherupushpa HSS (Chandankampara, Knr), Kristhu Jyothi HSS (Chettipuzha, Chy), Girideepam ‘B’ (Ktm). Pool C: Don Bosco HSS (Irinjalakuda), SH (Kilimala, Chy), Silver Hills HSS (Kzd). Pool D: Sacred Heart HSS (Thevara), Christ School (Tvl), Lourdes PS (Ktm).

Girls: Pool A: Mount Carmel HSS (Ktm), Kristhu Jyothi HSS (Chettipuzha), Mary Immaculate HS (Poomkavu, Alp). Pool B: Cherupushpa HSS (Chandankampara), Girideepam Bethany (Ktm), Marygiri HSS (Sreekantapuram, Knr). Pool C: Lourdes PS (Ktm), Carmel GHSS (Tvm), St. Gemma’s HS (Mlp). Pool D: Lady Sivaswami Iyer HSS (Chennai), St Joseph’s HSS (Alp), Presentation GHS (Kzd).

Mini division (league): Girideepam Bethany (Ktm), Kristhu Jyothi (Chettipuzha), St. John The Baptist HSS (Nedumkunnam), St. Vincent (Pala).
