Hyderabad: Six non-Muslims and ten women candidates figure in the first list released by the Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen for the GHMC polls late on Tuesday night. A total of 34 names were announced by the party in which majority are new faces. The Majlis has re-nominated nine former corporators, including the ex-Mayor, Mir Zulfeqar Ali. Majlis president, Asaduddin Owaisi, along with party MLAs interviewed the applicants till late in the night on Tuesday and continued the exercise on Wednesday. Names of more candidates are expected to be announced on Thursday. Mr. Asaduddin refused to tell how many divisions his party would contest. “The number is immaterial. Our aim is to win maximum number of divisions since Mayor’s election is indirect. But definitely we will be contesting more seats than earlier”, he remarked. Winning chances and loyalty to the party is the main criteria being adopted in selection of the candidates. With multi-corner contests becoming inevitable, the party feels it has good chances of romping home from majority of the divisions. The Majlis has no intention of contesting all the 150 divisions. In the previous civic poll, of the 100 divisions it contested 75 only and won 39. “We will be realistic and concentrate on areas where we have support”, Mr. Asaduddin said. Will there be a post poll alliance with the Congress? “No”, he says and hastened to add “we will cross the bridge when we come to it”.
