HYDERABAD: With 48 hours left for filing of the GHMC nominations, the Congress party was grappling with serious differences over the selection of candidates. Some legislators are planning to ask their supporters to file papers even before the final list is out. The differences were sharp on Wednesday as several Congress MLAs lodged a complaint against the ‘unilateral’ decisions taken by Health Minister and Greater Hyderabad Congress Committee chief Danam Nagender. Legislators K. Laxma Reddy, Bhikshapati Yadav, B. Raji Reddy, Akula Rajender, Jayasudha and Kuna Srisailam Goud met APCC president D. Srinivas and lamented at the selection without taking them into confidence. Chief Minister K. Rosaiah and Mr. Srinivas were closeted in a resort on the city outskirts to finalise the candidates after Mr. Nagender handed over the preliminary list for all 150 divisions. Several MLAs, MPs and MLCs while interacting with them pointed out that genuine party workers were ignored. “We are shocked to find names of persons who have nothing to do with the divisions,” an MLA from Ranga Reddy district lamented. “When former Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy was alive, a list of candidates from each division was submitted. But today, during our interaction with the APCC chief, we found those names missing.” Another MLA was cut up with Mr. Srinivas. “The entire exercise is futile as our suggestions are not given consideration. How can they ask us to work for the candidates who are unknown to voters? We have made it clear that any attempt to impose candidates will not be tolerated,” he said. The agitated MLAs are planning to bring the issue to AICC general secretary M. Veerappa Moily’s notice. A senior city MP was upset at being ignored. “How can the party chief and others support quota system? They should take the lists from all MLAs/MPs/MLCs before finalising the names. It is ridiculous to ask legislators to settle for one or two divisions. Winning chances should be the criteria,” he pointed out. It is understood that the APCC is likely to announce the list late on Thursday.
