Kochi: A Division Bench of the Kerala High Court on Wednesday held it was high time the government considered entrusting the selection process for appointments to various posts in the universities to the Kerala State Public Service Commission. The Bench comprising Justice K. Balakrishnan Nair and Justice T.R. Ramachandran Nair directed the government to consider amending relevant university Acts to provide selection to various posts, including the teaching and non-teaching staff, through the public service commission. The court made the observation while directing Calicut University to prepare and publish a separate rank list from among the 782 candidates who turned up for interview for the posts of Assistant Grade II. VacanciesThe court made it clear that the appointments could be made in the vacancies which had arisen up to July 7, 2006. The verdict came on a batch of review petitions filed by the candidates seeking a directive for making appointments to the remaining vacancies in the posts. They pointed out that some of the candidates who were included on the list prepared following the intervention of the High Court had not joined the posts. The list was prepared on July 7, 2006. The court pointed out that various allegations of irregularities were levelled in connection with the selection process. The experiences showed that at every stage, actions taken by various bodies of the universities were under challenge before the court. Therefore, the scenario required appropriate remedial action by the government.
