MEERUT: After Manish Pandey on Tuesday, it was the turn of another 20-year-old Karnataka-lad A. Mithun to come good in the midst of big boys. This well-built debutant medium-pacer announced his arrival in first-class cricket with a five-wicket haul and left Uttar Pradesh in trouble at the halfway stage of the Ranji Trophy Super League match here. By stumps on the second day, U.P. had limped to 214 for eight after it managed to restrict Karnataka’s first innings to 405. The host still needs 42 runs to avoid the possibility of being asked to follow-on. U.P.’s hopes rest on wicketkeeper Mohammad Amir Khan (50 batting, 1x6, 5x4) and his ongoing 57-run ninth-wicket stand with Praveen Gupta (21 batting, 3x4). The duo has already frustrated the visiting team for 58 minutes. For the second straight day, the first hour proved the best for U.P. before Karnataka asserted its superiority. If three wickets came U.P.’s way in the opening hour on Tuesday, the last five Karnataka wickets fell in a heap on Wednesday for the addition of just 33 runs to the overnight score of 372 for five. In the post-tea session, with Mithun away owing to cramps, U.P. improved its chances of reaching the target of 256, with some fine counter-attack, mainly from Khan.
