Twins born in ‘108’ ambulance

VILLUPURAM: A woman undergoing labour pain, who engaged the ‘108’ free ambulance service, gave birth to twins in the vehicle itself on Wednesday.
The official sources said that G. Saraswathi (25), wife of a daily wage worker Govindaraj of Ponniyenthal in Rishvandhiyam block, delivered two female children in the ambulance under the observance of the paramedical staff.
Calls received
The deliveries took place when vehicle was on its way to the government hospital at Rishivandhiyam.
The sources further said that ever since the introduction of the ambulance services in the district nearly 1,920 calls were received and of which 1,709 cases were duly attended.
In the remaining cases after making the calls either the patients went on their own or with the help of the neighbours to the hospitals.
The ambulances helped 644 pregnant women and 475 accident victims to reach the hospitals to get timely treatment.
So far 15 child deliveries, including the birth of twins, had taken place in the ambulances, the sources added.
