NEW DELHI: India’s chances of retaining the girls’ gold suffered a serious blow when overnight leader Soumya Swaminathan lost to Peru’s Deysi Cori Tello in the 12th and penultimate round of the World junior chess championship at Puerto Madryn, Argentina, on Monday. The defeat saw Soumya slip to the second spot and join Deysi at 8.5 points. Turkey’s Betul Cemre Yildiz is the new leader with nine points. In the final round, Kiran Manisha Mohanty faces Yildiz while Soumya comes up against another Turkish girl, Kubra Ozturk. The results (12th round, involving Indians): Open: Li Chao (Chn, 7.5) bt P. Karthikeyan (6.5); Sabino Burnello (Ita, 7) bt M.R. Lalith Babu (6.5); Julius Garnelis (Ltu, 6.5) drew with B. Adhiban (6.5). Bayarsaikhan Gundavaa (Mgl, 7) bt Shyam Sundar (6); Martin Ondrus (Svk, 5.5) lost to Aswin Jayaram (6.5). Vishnu Prasanna (5.5) lost to Luis Fernando Ibarra Chami (Mex, 6.5). Girls: Deysi Cori Tello (Per, 8.5) bt Soumya Swaminathan (8.5); Zhang Xiaowen (Chn, 8) bt Kiran Manisha Mohanty (7.5); Padmini Rout (7.5) bt Katrine Tjolsen (Nor, 7); Deimante Daulyte (Ltu, 6) lost to Mary Ann Gomes (7); Judith Fuchs (Ger, 6.5) bt S.
