NEW DELHI: The total prize-money for the 2009 edition of the BILT Open tournament, an important annual fixture on the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI) calendar, has been raised from Rs 80 lakh to Rs 1 crore. This is the highest ever prize-money announced for any domestic tournament. “In its fourth year, the BILT Open can be referred to as the flagship tournament of PGTI. “Reinforcing our commitment to professional golf, we have decided to increase the prize-money to Rs 1 crore this year,” Yogesh Agarwal, the Chief Operating Officer of the Ballarpur Industries Limited (BILT), said at a press conference here on Tuesday. PGTI Director Padamjit Sandhu described the hike as a key milestone. “We can see big tournaments consolidating the Tour and it helps the players get good competition and be ready for events at international level,” he said. Unlike the previous season, which had less than 20 tournaments over 18 months, the PGTI hopes to conduct 21-22 meets in 2009. The BILT Open 2009 will be played at the Jaypee Greens Golf Resorts from November 5 to 8. The pro-am event is scheduled on Wednesday.
