Tension in Vizag Agency ahead of Maoist bandh

Special Correspondent

CPI (Maoist) to protest against ‘Operation Green Hunt’

Maoists also protest ‘Operation Godavari’ in Andhra Pradesh

Security tightened at police stations, government offices

VISAKHAPATNAM: Maoists, who have not been active in the recent past, have stepped up their activity in the Visakha Agency area during the last few days on the eve of ‘Bharat Bandh’ on Wednesday and Thursday. The CPI (Maoist) gave the call to protest ‘Operation Green Hunt’, which the Central government plans to launch against it and the reported decision to resort to aerial bombing on its strongholds and ‘Operation Godavari’ in Andhra Pradesh.

Cadres active

After blocking the Chintapalli-Sileru road on Friday night and the Paderu-G. Madugula road on Sunday night by felling trees and placing them across the road during the last few days, the Maoists burnt a Forest Department check-post at Kakarapadu near Koyyuru in the early hours of Tuesday. They tied up the three or four Forest Department staffers on duty before setting the check-post on fire. Later, they blocked the road at Vangasara village on the Chintapalli-Paderu road and at Rompala on the GK Veedhi-KD Peta ghat road by placing tree trunks.

These acts, which have only nuisance value, were causing a lot of inconvenience to people, said Superintendent of Police Vineet Brij Lal on Tuesday. “However, the five incidents which happened in the area where the Galikonda area committee is active also indicated that the underground cadres are active and on the move and the local militia is supporting them. Hence we are not taking any chances,” Mr. Brij Lal said.

“Security at police stations and government offices has been tightened in the Agency area,” Mr. Brij Lal said.
