Kumaraswamy leaves for New Delhi

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: The former Chief Minister and Janata Dal (Secular) State unit president H.D. Kumaraswamy left for New Delhi on Tuesday evening amid speculation that he could meet senior Congress leaders in the wake of the crisis plaguing the B.S. Yeddyurappa-led Bharatiya Janata Party Government in the State.

Mr. Kumaraswamy told The Hindu that he was visiting New Delhi to attend a meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Rural Affairs scheduled for Wednesday.

However, he said the BJP Government is unlikely to last long in the State.

“There does not appear to be much hope for this Government to survive”, he said.

When asked whether there was any possibility of him holding talks with Congress leaders in the national capital, Mr. Kumaraswamy said it was very “premature” to talk about a Janata Dal (Secular)-Congress understanding.

Mr. Kumaraswamy, who is accompanied by former Minister and MLA Zameer Ahmed Khan, said he was scheduled to return to Bangalore on Wednesday evening.

Meanwhile, Janata Dal (Secular) sources in Bangalore said that the former Chief Minister is likely to hold talks with senior Congress leaders to explore the possibility of forming an alternative secular Government in the State.

It may also mentioned here that Janata Dal (Secular) national president H.D. Deve Gowda had ruled out the possibility of the party entering into any sort of an understanding with the BJP.

“We have already suffered enough from them”, Mr Gowda had said when asked whether the BJP had approached his party for support.
