Bangalore: The city will soon have its 10th electric crematorium coming up at Beggars’ Colony adjoining Outer Ring Road, near Magadi Road. The electric crematorium at Magadi Road — the Kaivalyadhama Crematorium — will serve residents of Magadi Road, Kamakshipalya, Nandini Layout, Kengeri, Nagarabhavi, Kanteeravanagar and surrounding areas. “The residents of this part of the city had for long been demanding the facility. Earlier, they were forced to either go to the Mysore Road Crematorium or Punyadhama Crematorium in Peenya,” said sources in Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), which is involved in its construction. Land on leaseLokesh, Executive Engineer, BBMP, said two acres of land has been taken on a 30-year lease from the Beggars’ Colony. The Rs. 3-crore electric crematorium is equipped with two state-of-the-art furnaces. “The crematorium has the capacity to cremate 20 bodies a day. The other facilities available at the new crematorium include adequate parking, two waiting halls, a separate ritual platform, two toilets each for men and women, earthing system and power backup facility,” he said. Mr. Lokesh said the civic authority had taken into account the sensitivity of the occasion, ensuring that the bereaved have the space to provide their kin a dignified cremation. “Most crematoria in the city have these facilities already. Here, we have landscaped gardens and well-lit exteriors,” he added. Two more coming upWith the existing crematoria struggling to keep up with the increase in population, the BBMP has plans to build two more, at Mahadevapura and Kengeri, taking the total number of crematoria to 12. A sum of Rs. 3.5 crore has been earmarked for the purpose.
