IT firm presents laptops to children

Special Correspondent

Thiruvananthapuram: The second anniversary celebrations of Satmetrix, a global company operating out of the Technopark campus at Kazhakuttom, near here, turned out to be a grand occasion for 30 children from government schools.

The children were presented laptop computers loaded with educational software at a function organised on the Technopark campus on Saturday to mark the anniversary.

They were part of a batch of 30 economically underprivileged children from the city and nearby areas selected by the company last year for a mentoring programme named ‘Guiding Light.’

Under the programme, Satmetrix employees mentor the children and provide them educational tools. The children are also taken to the Satmetrix office to experience the hi-tech working atmosphere.

Adoor Gopalakrishnan, filmmaker, was the chief guest at the second anniversary celebrations. Mervin Alexander, chief executive officer of Technopark; Richard Owen, chief executive officer of Satmetrix Worldwide; and Varughese George, president and director of Satmetrix India; were present.

Against glass ceilings

“There should not be any glass ceilings for bright and talented children,” said Mr. George. “Being economically underprivileged should not be a barrier for children; they are filled with high hopes and beautiful dreams. Through this programme, we provide the deserving children the influence of positive role models and friendship of caring mentors to help them explore their potential, achieve self-confidence and early advantage to grow up as confident, competent and caring young adults.”

The children participated in debates on ‘Kerala society’s tolerance for political violence’ and ‘The relevance of the India-U.S. Nuclear Treaty on its first anniversary.’

Later, Mr. Adoor Gopalakrishnan presented them the power-efficient laptops.
