Nine houses damaged in fire
Staff Reporter
HYDERABAD: Fire emanating from effluents released by a chemical factory at Gandhinagar Industrial Area in Jeedimetla left nine neighbouring houses damaged on Tuesday, prompting the locals to agitate for closure of the factory.
Fortunately, none was injured in the fire accident that burnt windows and doors of the houses leaving the outside walls and articles left in the open charred. The chemical wastage of Viven Laboratories is released into the nala which passes through the adjacent Venkataramana colony.
“Around 6.30 a.m., fire broke out in the nala filled with chemical wastage apparently due to some reaction. The blazes soon spread to the houses abutting it,” Sub-Inspector Pravinder Rao said. By the time local fire-tender was called in, the flames partially damaged nine houses.
Locals said the damage could have been more if the fire occurred late in the night. Tension prevailed as the demonstration continued till evening with agitators urging the government to close the factory immediately.
