DECONGESTING THE STRETCH: The South Cooum Road where several shops dealing in heavy vehicle spare parts are located. CHENNAI: Hundreds of automobile spare parts traders in Pudupet are planning to shift their business to Vandalur. The move comes in the backdrop of the time taken by the government to respond to their demand for creation of an ‘Auto Nagar’ on the outskirts of the city. “We wanted the government to help us shift to any location in the Chennai Metropolitan Area. But it appears the planning authorities and revenue officials are unable to come up with a solution for our problems,” said D. Kandasamy, president, Automobile Spare Parts Merchants’ Development Association. “The traffic congestion in Pudupet has been rising. It is becoming a hindrance to our customers and business. We want to move to another location,” added N.Ghulam, Secretary, Motor Spare Parts and Iron (second hand) Merchants’ Association. The Pudupet market is famous for dealing in spare parts of different categories of vehicles and used automobiles. It has more than 1,000 shops selling spare parts harvested from damaged vehicles auctioned by insurance companies and government agencies. Adithanar Salai, Venkatachala Naicken Street, Venkatachala Achari Street and South Cooum Road are the main streets in Pudupet that serve as the hub of the market. The upcoming Assembly complex and the government plan to vacate around 140 shops on South Cooum Road have also created fear among the traders about the likely hindrance to their business. Shops on South Cooum Road sell spare parts of heavy vehicles. The shops were originally set up to rehabilitate refugees from Burma some decades ago.
