Madras Dyslexia Association plans remedial centres in city

Liffy Thomas

CHENNAI: The Madras Dyslexia Association, a non-profit organisation working in the field of specific learning disabilities or dyslexia is spreading its wings.

It is in the process of training candidates so as to help them start remedial centres at convenient locations, functioning as franchisees.

“In 1994-95 we had three centres functioning on a franchisee model but they discontinued for various reasons. Today, in a class of 40 students at least seven children would experience some or the other learning disability. With increased awareness there is need to spread our wings at the same time also ensure that quality is maintained,” said Sudha Vaidyanathan, academic coordinator, MDA.

The month-long course will start from November 16, where eligibility includes a degree and spoken English skills among others.

“We welcome mainstream school teachers or homemakers to run these centres at their own convenience as remedial teachers,” said Vilasini Diwakar, MDA Coordinator.

MDA has increasingly been feeling the need to start remedial centres across the city, especially on the outskirts as children find it difficult to commute and resource rooms in schools are limited in reach and capacity. The organisation currently runs a full-time learning centre (Ananya) and a part-time centre, both in T. Nagar, besides it has resource rooms in around seven schools.
