BANGALORE: In a first of its kind in Bangalore, the 10th Main in RMV Extension, Sadashivanagar, came to be lit with Light Emitting Diodes (LED) lights recently. An initiative of the Sadashivanagar Residents’ Welfare Association, the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and Navachetana Trust, 15 LED lights have been installed at a cost of Rs. 2.5 lakh to illuminate half a kilometre of road. Lauding the initiative, Malleswaram MLA Ashwath Narayana, said: “The BBMP has proposed to replace all the mercury and sodium lights with energy-saving LED lights across the city.” The LED lights are more energy efficient than the sodium lights, and up to 60 per cent electricity can be saved, he added. V. Srinivasa Raju of Navachetana Trust and a resident of Sadashivanagar said: “LED lights present many advantages over traditional light sources, including lower energy consumption, longer life time, smaller size and faster switching. These lights are environment-friendly.” Residents of other localities, he said, have come forward to fund this project to install LED lights in their areas.
