MADURAI: A one-day Continuing Medical Education (CME) programme on ‘Geriatric orthopaedics’ was held at Meenakshi Mission Hospital and Research Centre (MMHRC) here on November 1. Orthopaedic problems faced by old people and challenges for orthopaedic surgeons were discussed at the meet. The CME programme was organised jointly by the Department of Orthopaedics, MMHRC and the Indian Medical Association, Madurai Meenakshi branch. Around 250 doctors, including orthopaedic surgeons, physiotherapists, anaesthesiologists, general practitioners and postgraduate medical students, participated in the programme. Kasim, former Inspector General of Police, inaugurated the programme which was presided over by N. S.Laud, a well-known Mumbai-based orthopaedic surgeon. A portrait of M. Muthusamy, senior consultant orthopaedic surgeon at MMHRC, who passed away recently, was unveiled. According to organisers, the special meet on geriatric orthopaedics assumes significance since there are 77 million old people in the country and the figure is expected to rise to 177 million by 2025 due to increased life expectancy of people. V. N. Rajasekaran, Medical Director, MMHRC, welcomed the gathering and V. Sathyanarayana, senior consultant orthopaedics surgeon, proposed a vote of thanks.
