Visit: Minister for Highways M. P. Saminathan (right) interacting with Sri Lankan Tamils at the refugee camp at Paruvai in Tirupur on Tuesday. Tirupur: Following a directive from Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, the Minister for Highways and Minor Ports, M.P. Saminathan, along with senior revenue officials inspected the refugee camp set up for Sri Lankan Tamils situated at Paruvai near here on Tuesday. Official sources said that the visit was aimed at studying the infrastructure facilities in the camp and also get a feedback from the inhabitants on their needs to improve quality of life on the premises. A total of 132 persons (109 adults and 32 children) belonging to 38 families were housed at the camp in Paruvai. The inmates pointed out the need to enhance sanitation and drinking water facilities in the area, among other things. They also sought Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) connections and provision for drawing palm oil and wheat from the Public Distribution System. “The inmates are now provided with rice at a subsidised cost of 37 paise a kg and a few other essential commodities through the PDS,” revenue officials said. Sources added that cash allowances were also disbursed at the rate of Rs. 400 for every family head, Rs. 258 for other adult members, Rs. 180 for children and Rs. 90 for infants. Collector C. Samayamoorthy was present. Official sources said that facilities at the other five refugee camps functioning in the district at Avinashi, Neruparichal, Perumanallur, Thirumoorthy Nagar and Kangayam would also be reviewed periodically.
