Baroda toils as Delhi takes control

Special Correspondent

VADODARA: Delhi capitalised on Baroda’s predicament after new ball bowler Salim Veragi was called by the umpire for suspect action, thriving on fielding lapses to amass 300 for two at stumps on the first day of Ranji Trophy super league opener on Tuesday.

The right-arm pace bowler was no-balled twice by leg umpires. The first instance occured in Veragi’s eighth over and it was repeated in his ninth after surprisingly being brought back into the attack for a third spell.

Meanwhile, Shikhar Dhawan (122 batting, 247b, 379m, 12x4) took his chances, got four ‘lives’ at 11, 50, 70 and 93 to put on 137 for the second wicket with Gaurav Chabra (65 off 139 balls), then 133 for the third wicket with Rajat Bhatia (70 batting).

Already handicapped by Irfan Pathan’s absence, Baroda’s young pace attack struggled on a wicket displaying a tinge of red. Dropped catches also left them red-faced.

Aakash Chopra won the toss, but lost his wicket in the fifth over. The Delhi skipper struck three crackling cover drives, and then played on when a Veragi delivery nipped back.

Baroda brought in off-spinner Yusuf Pathan in the 13th over after seeing youngsters Ajitesh Argal and Murutza Vahore slog hard without success. The scores: Delhi — 1st innings: A. Chopra b Veragi 21, S. Dhawan (batting) 122, G. Chabra lbw b Vahora 65, R Bhatia (batting) 70, Extras (b-6, lb-9, nb-5, w-2) 22; Total (for two wickets in 90 overs) 300.

Fall of wkts: 1-30, 2-167.
